Cofely, a GDF SUEZ company, successfully constructs energy efficient installations for new Shell Technology Centre in Amsterdam
Cofely builds and operates the installations for Shell Technology Centre’s new research centre in Amsterdam. The technical service provider is notably supplying the air conditioning installation for the offices and a process cooling installation for the laboratories in the new centre. These installations reduce CO2 emissions by 60% compared with conventional installations, equal to the annual emissions of 340 homes. Cofely will operate the installations for at least 15 years.
The new Shell Technology Centre will be carrying out research into the development of cleaner and more efficient fossil fuels and biofuels which requires extra process cooling in addition to the normal air conditioning. For that reason, the energy provision supplied by Cofely is expressly flexible and adapted to the varying energy demand.
Cofely is supplying energy provision based on heat and cold storage. Two pairs of heat/cold storage in aquifers drilled at a depth of 180 meters provide the heating and cooling. Combined with three heat pumps and sophisticated maintenance management, these installations meet the high standards that Shell sets on operational safety.
Cofely is responsible for the assembly of the heating installation, the cooling water system, process cooling and air conditioning for the new 80,000 m2 laboratory and office complex. The sub-project includes the outsourcing of all contracts, purchasing, detailed design, engineering, third-party management, quality management, HSE policy and financial monitoring.
Ruud Majenburg, member of the Executive Team and Managing Director of Cofely’s market sector and specialist businesses, explains: “The new installation is efficient, energy-saving, and environmentally friendly. Moreover, The installation takes up little space, which benefits the building’s net surface area. We call that making full use of Energy Efficiency.”
The Shell Technology Centre Amsterdam, which will be officially opened in September 2009, is part of the new ‘Amsterdam on the IJ,’ in the Overhoeks area. In this new district, Cofely is responsible for the sustainable energy supplies for all of the homes, offices and catering establishments, as well as the Film museum.
