24 million euro order for sustainable electromechanical installations on the Westrandweg

08 October 09 |

The Westrandweg is part of the Second Coentunnel/Westrandweg project. A recent milestone for this project was reached on 7 September when the first spade was symbolically dug into the ground, an event attended by Minister C. Eurlings of Transport, Public Works and Water Management. The Coentunnel has been a traffic bottleneck in the northern Randstad area for years. For that reason, it was decided that a second tunnel should be constructed beside the existing Coentunnel, and to prevent the traffic pressure from shifting to the A10 west, a new motorway would be built between the A10 and the Raasdorp interchange: the Westrandweg. This new motorway, which will be about 10 km long, will have two junctions in the western harbour area of Amsterdam. In the Westpoort industrial zone, the Westrandweg will be constructed in the form of a 3.3-kilometre-long viaduct.

“In order to be able to optimally fulfil the requirements, we worked very closely with the Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management right from the design stage of the Westrandweg,” explains Ruud Majenburg, member of the Executive Team and Managing Director of Cofely’s market segment and specialist companies. “A lot of attention was paid to energy efficiency in the design of the road and in the electromechanical installations. By installing dynamic public lighting around the Westrandweg, for example, a significant electricity savings is created.”
